Best Practice: What the Heck Does Congeal Mean?

CONGEAL MEANS TO COOL UNDER PRESSURE.

Document-2-page001

Hand / Foot Impulse Sealers
The hand or foot sealer is a manual sealer. What this means is that the congeal step or dwell step needs to be added into your sealing process to make a proper seal.    Hold the jaw down for a couple of seconds after the timer light has gone off to set the seal.  This will ensure a proper seal and will also allow the sealer to cool down before the next seal.  This will ensure longevity of the heating elements.

Auto Impulse Sealers
We recommend the congeal (cooling) setting to be at least 2x greater than the heat setting.  This will ensure that the seal has ample opportunity to set and cool under pressure.  This will also allow the heating element to cool as well.  The most important step for the longevity of auto sealers is having the appropriate congealing time.  Most customers skip the congeal setting in order to get a higher ppm (packages per minute) but this will only lead to problems – broken element and PC Board.

SEALER SALES VIDEO SERIES: Band Sealer Maintenance – Changing Sealing and Drive Belts

Daily maintenance or replacement of parts for your band sealer will keep your machine in its optimal condition.   Our first video in our Band Sealer Maintenance Video series will discuss how to change the sealing and drive Belts.

Both sealing and drive belts are consumable items and we recommend changing the belts from time to time. Sealing belts should be changed when the band sealer begins to display “spotty” sealing and/or the user notices that there are “burnt” or worn out areas. Drive belts should be replaced when the belts break or become badly cracked.

Maintenance – How to change the Heating Element and PTFE Cover/Adhesive on your Hand Sealer

Maintenance is KEY to a long lasting impulse sealer.  Regular maintenance of your impulse sealer will ensure the longevity of your sealer.  After using between 1,000-5,000 seals, it is normal for the heating element (wire) to break .  The number is dependent on your timer setting and will vary from user to user.  Regularly replacing your sealer’s heating wire, PTFE adhesive (sticky brown protective skin under the element), and the PTFE cover (brown protective skin over the element) is essential for your sealer’s health and well-being.

Take a look at our instructional video on how to change out your heating element and insulation pieces.

MAINTENANCE – Direct Heat (Constant Heat) Sealers

KF-CS Series Portable Direct Heat Sealer

For sealing thicker materials, we are big fans of direct heat sealers – portable or foot operated.  Direct Heat Sealers provide really beautiful seals and are super easy to use.  However, to ensure that your direct heat sealer enjoys a long life, please follow the following easy steps.

  1. Always unplug the sealer from the power source when doing maintenance.
  2. Make sure the unit is not left on when not in use for a period of time.
  3. Do not leave the unit on overnight.  This will shorten the life of the parts.
  4. Find the lowest temperature that will still seal the bag.
  5. Make sure that when the foot board is depressed that the foot board does not hit the ground.
  6. Make sure that the unit is wiped down periodically to remove any excess bag material left behind after sealing.
  7. Remove any food debris from the sealer or seal bars that may have oozed out of the bag when sealing if you are packaging food.
  8. Purchase Silicone Spray from a local hardware store . There are many brands & types.  I would look for food grade Silicone Spray if packaging food.

  9. Spray the Silicone Spray onto a shop rag or tooth brush.  When the sealer is turned off for the day & near cooled, still warm is a perfect time to wipe down the sealer.  Never spray the Silicone Spray directly on to the unit.

MAINTENANCE – for your Hand Impulse Sealer

Regular maintenance of your impulse sealer will ensure the longevity of your sealer.  After using between 1,000-5,000 seals, it is normal for the heating element (wire) to break .  The number is dependent on your timer setting and will vary from user to user.  Regularly replacing your sealer’s heating wire, PTFE adhesive (sticky brown protective skin under the element), and the PTFE cover (brown protective skin over the element) is essential for your sealer’s health and well-being.

An impulse sealer’s PTFE adhesive serves as a barrier between the heating element and the sealer’s body.  When the sealer’s heating element has burned through the bottom PTFE adhesive and arc’ed on the sealer’s body, the heating element will break and may also damage the timer.

**When replacing the heating element, you MUST also replace the bottom PTFE adhesive.  Make sure the PTFE adhesive is 1/4″ and 1/2″ past the machine on both ends.  This prevents the heating element from coming in contact with the sealer’s body.
