New Product Introductions

NewProduct-sealersales

We are excited to introduce a couple of products in both our equipment and flexible packaging product line.

Our popular CN-4520A shrink tunnel is now available with a PTFE meshed belt.  This is an excellent option for operators trying to shrink small items which may fall in between the rods of the conveyor.  Check out our video demo.

Our SM-101 semi-automatic strapping machine is a general purpose strapping machine that can strap packages quickly and efficiently.  Strapping cycle will automatically start when operator inserts strap.  The machine will automatically shut down after a preset time to save electricity.  We recommend this machine for strapping cartons in a light industry setting.  Check out video demo.

On the flexible packaging side, we are pleased to introduce our slider bags using the advanced Slide-Rite closure system.  We carry both clear slider zipper bags and cushion slider zipper pouches.  Lead times are 7-10 business days.

Sealer Sales Gives Back

SanJoseU_blogpost_header

Sealer Sales recently made a donation of hand impulse sealers (FS-200 and FSC-220) and stand up pouches to the Industrial Engineering department at San Jose State University to assist with their annual class project.

Every spring undergraduate students take Industrial and Systems Engineering 120, a work measurement/work design class where they repeatedly design, test, build and then use a work station for making trail mix for on-campus food pantries.

In ISE 120, the students analyze every hand movement redesigning to increase safety while decreasing cycle time.  Each year, the class distributes over 1,200 bags of trail mix (500+lbs) to the 11 on-campus food pantries.  Read more about the trail mix project here.

The students provided us with a summary of best practices which we found useful to share here:

  • The sealer was simple and practical to use. Our group had no prior experience in using a sealer, but we managed to utilize it effectively.  It was easy to use and safe.
We recommend our hand impulse sealers to nearly anyone starting out a project where they need to seal plastic bags.  As the San Jose State University students have summarized, the sealer is simple and easy to use.
  • The best practice the participants learned in using the impulse sealers were to always keep an eye on the light and to ensure to count to four seconds after the light turned green.
Congealing is the process of allowing the seal to cool under pressure. This allows the seal to set and cool providing the best quality seal.  Read more here:  https://sealers101.com/2012/01/25/impulse-sealers-how-to-achieve-the-best-seal/
  • Using a higher setting than normal for the small sandwich bags for food donations.
Different materials will require different timer settings. Previously, the students were packaging their trail mix in sandwich bags which is a much thinner bag compared to our stand up pouches (4mil).  Adjusting for different materials is important when using a hand impulse sealer.  We always recommend using the lowest timer setting that will seal your material.
  • An important aspect of using the impulse sealers was to be patient and let the device do its job. Making sure to properly seal the bag involved a bit of practice trials, but once the team was comfortable using the machine it worked very well.  Ensuring we had a proper seal was vital for this experiment because the project involved sealing food and without a device like the impulse sealer the product wouldn’t be airtight and ready for distribution.

Sealer Sales is committed to serving educational and charitable organizations and we are very excited to be able to assist with this project.  To see more pictures of the project, click here.

A Quick Primer on Heat Sealers

Jan2017_Blog-Header_01

Our latest blog post is a refresher on the general basics of heat sealers.  There are many types of sealers and choosing the right one may be overwhelming without a few basic points.  We discuss four key characteristics of sealers to help you determine which best fits your application.

FUNCTION

Impulse sealers require no warm up time and seal by applying a pulse of energy to the sealing area, followed immediately by cooling.  Impulse sealers only use power when the jaw is lowered.  We recommend an impulse sealer for any thermoplastic material such as polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP) which requires a lower seal temperature. Impulse sealers are easy to use (no warm-up time), economical (electricity used only during sealing process), and safe (no component is always hot).

Direct heat (constant heat) sealers maintain constant heat in both jaws.  Direct heat sealers use power as long as the machine is turned on.  As a result, direct heat sealers possess better heat penetration in order to seal thicker materials.  We recommend a direct heat sealer for materials such as coated aluminum foil, poly cello films, gusset bags, coated Kraft papers, waxed paper, cellophane, mylar, coated PP, and other thicker materials.  Direct heat sealers cannot seal polyethylene.

Feel free to read our previous posts comparing impulse vs. direct heat sealers

SIZE

The size of the sealer depends on the width of the material to be sealed.  We usually recommend adding one inch to the width of material to be sealed to determine sealer length for easier handling.  Cutters on the sealer usually trim at slightly less than width of the sealer arm.

SPEED

See below for a general guideline on speed (packages per minute) of our impulse and direct heat sealers.

WIDTH OF SEAL

Heating elements are made of nichrome (nickel-chromium) and determine the width of the seal.  There are two types of heating elements: round or flat which are interchangeable in most sealers. The round wire is mainly used to cut and seal with no excess material above the seal.  Depending on the width of the flat wire element, sealers are available in 2-3mm, 5mm, 8mm, or 10 mm. Some sealers are equipped with two heating elements for faster heat penetration making them ideal for sealing thicker materials.
